The Abia State Government has gained the support of Nsulu clan in the  Isialangwa North Local Government Area for the proposed Abia Airport project, following initial protests from a section of the host communities.

During a meeting on Wednesday with representatives from the host communities, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, clarified the government’s intentions and addressed the concerns raised by protesters.

He attributed the opposition to misinformation, stating, “There are people who may not fully understand the government’s plans. This engagement ensures everyone is properly informed.”

Ajagba emphasised Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s commitment to inclusive dialogue, promising further visits to all affected communities to resolve any outstanding issues amicably.

He assured the residents that their livelihoods would not be jeopardised, and the government would compensate them for any disruptions.

“This project is for the overall benefit of everyone. Traces are being cut now, and enumeration will follow to ensure compensation is paid to the host communities,” Ajagba said.

Community representatives, including Dr. Jessy Odu and Mr. Kingsley Ukaegbu, expressed their support for the project, highlighting its economic and employment benefits.

They noted that only one of the eight host communities had protested, attributing the dissent to a lack of accurate information.

“The airport, when realised, will boost economic activities, create jobs for our youth, and open up the land for development,” Odu remarked.

The meeting, which was attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, and the Airport Project Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji, concluded with renewed commitment from the government to foster dialogue and transparency throughout the project’s development.
