Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a statement to clarify his comments about scratches on his face and head following the team’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Feyenoord.
In his post-match press conference, Guardiola acknowledged the scratches, saying, “I want to harm myself.” However, he quickly explained that the scratches were caused by his fingernail.
Guardiola has now taken to social media to further clarify his comments, stating that he did not intend to make light of self-harm. He emphasized the seriousness of mental health issues and encouraged those struggling to seek help.
“I know that many people struggle with mental health issues every day,” Guardiola said. “I would like to take this moment to highlight one of the ways people can seek help, by calling the Samaritans hotline on 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org.”
Manchester City’s draw with Feyenoord marked the team’s sixth consecutive winless game across all competitions, with five of those being defeats.
