The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has vehemently condemned Saturday’s local government election, labeling it a “show of shame.” The party’s chairman, Gbenga Akinbuli, alleged widespread irregularities, harassment, and intimidation by agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akinbuli claimed that electoral officers were not provided with the necessary forms, and results were announced without being properly documented.
The SDP is calling for the immediate cancellation of the election and the resignation of Dr. Joseph Aremo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC). Akinbuli stated that Aremo had assured the party of a fair election process but failed to deliver.
However, Dr. Aremo countered that the election was conducted in accordance with the law and that 12 political parties participated. He presented certificates of return to the newly elected chairmen, stating that APC candidates emerged as winners in all 18 local government areas.
It’s worth noting that the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), withdrew from the election due to concerns over the electoral body’s credibility.
