The Enugu State Government has partnered with WhiteRabbit Agro Limited to develop a massive cocoa plantation in the state. The pilot project, located in Nkanu East Local Government Area, spans 20 hectares and aims to make Enugu a major cocoa producer and processor.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, revealed that the project will expand to five other local government areas, including Nkanu West, Isi-Uzo, Oji-River, Aninri, and Awgu. Each area will have a pilot cocoa plantation of at least 100 hectares.
To support the project, 100,000 high-yielding and early-producing cocoa varieties are being developed in partnership with the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria. A cocoa nursery has been established at Amaechi Idodo community in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
The commissioner highlighted the economic potential of cocoa production, noting that one tonne of cocoa can fetch around USD$10,500 (approximately N16.3 million) in the international market.
The Enugu State Government aims to encourage farmers to take up cocoa farming and establish large plantations. The ministry is open to collaborations with individuals, organizations, and governments to support the cocoa initiative and other agricultural practices in the state.
Ultimately, the project aims to contribute to the state’s GDP growth target of $30 billion and position Enugu as a major player in the cocoa industry. With ongoing work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu will soon be ready to export quality, organic, and fresh farm produce to international destinations.
