Aviation unions in Nigeria have issued an ultimatum to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), threatening to withdraw their services from airports nationwide on March 31, 2025. This move is in response to the repeated physical assaults on FAAN personnel by Customs officers, including a recent attack on the Director of Aviation Security.
The unions, comprising the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), are demanding that FAAN establishes clear work protocols with security agencies. These protocols should align with global best practices and include sanctions for violations to ensure staff safety.
The unions have also accused FAAN of ignoring prior ultimatums, leaving them with no choice but to take drastic action. If their demands are not met, the unions will direct all workers to withdraw from airports starting March 31, 2025.
So far, FAAN and the Nigeria Customs Service have not responded to the warnings.
